As part of our ethos we work hard to transform the waste that we accept into usable products. The following list gives an idea of what we can do with rubbish...
Paper and cardboard are separated to become a raw material pulp for the production of more paper and cardboard.
Glass also becomes a raw material for further glass production although it must be sorted by colour before manufacturers will be able to use it. The resulting glass chips are known as cullet.
Green waste is separated and composted for fertilizer.
Aluminium is a useful and easily recycled metal which is substantially cheaper to reuse than to produce from ore.
Plastics can be recycled in certain circumstances and we are working hard to find more outlets for this material. Most recycled plastics are currently handled by compounders.
Textiles can also be recycled. For example, providing they are in good condition we can export clothing and blankets to developing countries.
Ferrous Metals are recovered magnetically and are sent to steel works for reprocessing. Typically this is used as feed stock for electric arc furnaces.
Wood can also be recycled but usually requires some processing by us to remove metal and to turn it into chip.
Inerts such as building rubble can be a positive input to landfill by helping to stablilize the area. It is also used as in-fill material on construction projects.
